There’s trouble afoot in Sallèles-d’Aude.
Our first inkling of the problem came in December when we received an open letter to the citizens of Sallèles-d’Aude from the Mayor. We assumed it would be an upbeat, year-end recap of the city but we were wrong. It was a treatise defending his support of the construction of a Casino supermarche on the outskirts of town. He insisted that the Casino and the other stores in the still unfinished strip mall were vital to the long-term well-being of Sallèles and then, in no uncertain terms, he denounced those who were opposed to the plan.
We were thrilled! A Casino Supermarche in Sallèles-d’Aude! No more driving to Capestang or Colombiers for groceries!
In January, the town’s monthly flyer contained more news…..construction had been halted while the Planning Commission in Montpellier reviewed the blueprints to ensure they met with handicap accessibility requirements.
By February, work had resumed and it was still hoped that the store would open in March. That was just a little optimistic…..it opened in April……much to the chagrin of the people who fought a losing battle to keep it out of their town. They fear that this big business will put their local bakers, butcher and small grocers out of business and destroy the vibrant community they live in. To show their displeasure, they’re boycotting the Casino and defacing any signage that directs people to its location.
We were warned by British friends that cars seen in the Casino’s parking lot have been vandalized…..guess we’ll keep driving to Colombiers.
Trouble, oh we got trouble,
Right here in River City!
