Monday, April 18th – Musings on Holland

Now that we’re back and have had some time to think about our trip, here are our thoughts on Holland……

On the down side….

-The service in most restaurants is slow and inefficient…..they could learn a lot from McDonald’s.

They sell 'em....but no one wears 'em

-Bicycles….ok, they’re environmentally friendly but they’re at the top of the pecking order.  Pedestrians, beware and be ready to jump.  And drivers….just roll over and bare your throat….if a car hits a drunk bicyclist who’s running a red light, it’s the driver’s fault.  And no one wears a helmet…..we’ve seen them in bike stores, but no one buys them.  What’s a two-word synonym for Blunt Force Trauma?…….Dutch Bicyclist.

On the positive side……

-It’s a pristinely beautiful country.

-The architecture is so interesting….cantilevers, rounds, trapezoids….every shape under the sun is used.

-Everyone speaks English!

-Freeways!  Well-maintained, easy to navigate…..and toll-free.

-Bicycle paths!  In the cities (especiallly Amsterdam), the bicyclists can be terrorists but everywhere else in the country, they’re blissfully segregated on their own little roads….wish the rest of Europe had them.

-Jenever!  Need I say more?
